Moving belongings to a unit you rent
This service page is about the physical move between your home or business and a self-storage unit you arrange with a separate facility. You select the facility, rent the unit and manage the rental agreement, permitted contents, access permissions and ongoing storage conditions. Share those arrangements with Spry Movers when discussing transport and handling.
It is different from arranging a broader storage plan or having a portable container delivered. This page does not promise Spry-owned warehouse space, a container rental, climate control, facility security or insurance for items in storage. If you have not chosen a storage arrangement, start with our moving-and-storage planning overview.
Inventory what goes in and what comes out
List furniture, appliances where accepted by the facility, boxed belongings and unusually heavy or fragile pieces. Separate the items going into storage from items going directly to another address. Number cartons and keep a simple inventory with photographs so you can identify a later partial collection without opening every box.
For a move out of storage, tell the team whether the unit will be emptied or only selected items collected. Mark the items to take and note anything buried behind other belongings. Describe the current packing and stacking condition honestly; photographs of the entrance and interior help explain the work without assuming that a unit size predicts its contents.
Confirm gate, office and elevator hours
Check the facility’s vehicle-gate hours, staffed office hours and elevator availability separately. Ask whether a moving truck needs an appointment, a particular entrance, clearance checks or a designated loading area. Confirm any restrictions on keeping doors open or leaving equipment in corridors.
Arrange for an authorized customer representative to provide access, keys and the correct unit location. Keep access codes private and share them through an agreed channel rather than public labels. Explain the distance from parking to the unit, stairs, ramps, lift dimensions and any time-limited loading bay. Do not assume an onsite cart or freight elevator will be available without checking.
Check unit dimensions and the route to it
Measure or obtain the usable floor dimensions, height and door opening from the facility, and compare them with your largest pieces. A unit’s advertised size does not guarantee every item will fit through its door or the building’s turns. Share measurements and photographs when asking about furniture preparation.
Plan space for belongings you will retrieve during the rental, rather than filling the entrance completely. Follow the facility’s stacking, clearance and prohibited-item rules. Ask the facility what protection or environmental conditions it provides; the moving quote is not a storage rental or a guarantee against moisture, temperature changes or pests.
Agree load order and items needed first
For a move into the unit, identify items intended for the back and those that should remain accessible near the front. Discuss that placement plan before loading the truck. Let the crew determine a safe loading method within the agreed scope rather than assuming every requested retrieval order is possible.
For a move out, label cartons with the destination room and identify items needed first at the new address. Keep medication, valuables, documents, keys and immediate personal necessities with you. If only part of the unit is moving, allow for access to those items and tell the team whether any remaining belongings need repositioning.
Protect and label belongings before the move
Use suitable cartons, avoid overloading them and label contents and fragile items without exposing sensitive details. Keep hardware with its furniture in a clearly marked container. Prepare items clean and dry in accordance with manufacturer instructions and the facility’s rules; resolve leaks, dampness or prohibited contents before moving day.
Ask which wrapping, moving blankets, mattress covers, dollies or other handling supplies are appropriate and whether they are included, charged separately or removed after delivery. Protection used in transit is not automatically suitable for long-term storage. Confirm who packs breakables and who prepares or reassembles furniture instead of treating those tasks as included by default.
Have move-day information ready
Bring the inventory, facility contact details, access instructions, lock and destination plan. Confirm which address the crew should meet first and who will be present at each stop. Before leaving a unit, check the agreed inventory and placement, keep any required access routes clear and secure the unit according to the facility’s process.
When emptying a unit, the customer should check the rental provider’s checkout and notice requirements. Moving the contents does not itself cancel the storage contract. Note any concerns about delivered items promptly and follow the documentation and reporting steps in your moving agreement.
Information and questions for your quote
Send pickup and delivery addresses, your preferred date, the unit size and floor, an item list, photographs, gate and elevator hours, parking details and whether this is a full or partial collection. Identify multiple stops, oversized pieces, packing needs and items that need early access.
Ask about the agreed labor and transport, materials, travel, furniture preparation and any potential waiting or additional-handling charges. Confirm how changes to the inventory or facility access affect the quote. Request written payment, cancellation and protection terms. No storage rental price, guaranteed fit or facility service is implied by this page.
